Research Topics
Early research topics (which continue to interest me!):
General linguistics, syntax, the interplay between word order and intonation, classification of English adverbials and their position/intonation; information structure; prosody (especially in EFL); impact of “tone deafness” on learning intonation.
Research topics since the 1980s:
Terminology and terminography (with a focus on (a) medical terminology and (b) the terminology of communication); terminology management systems; electronic dictionaries design; terminology recognition; translation memory; CAT systems; new translation tools.
PhD research that I have recently supervised / am supervising:
-Lieve Macken’s research on subsentential alignment (PhD defended 2010)
-Klaar Vanopstal’s research on “biomedical information retrieval: bridging the language barrier”.
